How Ben Lost 10kg, Built Muscle & Transformed His Physique at 47
Written by Danny Silverstein for Enaz Fitness
How structured training, smarter nutrition and consistent coaching helped Ben build a lean, muscular physique, while navigating some of the most turbulent years of his life.
What if the biggest thing standing between you and the physique you want isn't a lack of effort?
For 47-year-old Ben, effort was never really the problem.
He had trained in the gym for years, was strong, and had previously competed in endurance sports, including triathlon and rowing.
But there was one problem.
He wasn't actually in the shape he thought he was.
“I was kidding myself a bit. I'd look in the mirror and think I was looking great because I was big and strong. The reality was that I was big with muscle, but I was also carrying a lot of fat.”
Deep down, Ben knew there was a difference between being big and strong and being genuinely lean and athletic.
When his clothes started becoming tighter, it became an increasingly difficult reality check.
“At 47, clothing becomes quite a good reality check too. When things stop fitting, you start asking yourself: is this actually muscle, or is it fat?”
Then Instagram introduced him to Enaz Fitness.
“I remember looking through the before and afters and thinking: I want to be one of the afters, because however much I might be telling myself otherwise, I'm currently a before.”
The Problem Wasn't Training. It Was Nutrition.
Ben already knew how to train.
The bigger issue was his diet.
He considered himself someone who ate healthily, but he'd never really understood how much he was eating.
“I could eat enormous amounts of healthy food without appreciating what that meant in calories.”
He also had an unhealthy relationship with junk food and had never paid much attention to calories, macros or portion sizes.
Suddenly having to understand exactly what was going onto his plate felt completely unfamiliar.
“I didn't really understand calories at all. Suddenly having to work out what was in my breakfast, lunch and dinner, calories, macros, portion sizes felt completely alien.”
But that didn't last.
Within a few weeks, something that had once seemed complicated became routine.
Structure Made Consistency Easier
Ben describes himself as someone who works well with planning and consistency, so the structure of coaching suited him perfectly.
“I've almost always had a coach. I'm quite happy for someone else to do the thinking if I know what I need to do. My job is then to do the work.”
His programme gave him five structured workouts each week, with consistent exercises that allowed him to focus on progressing rather than constantly learning something new.
“I'd much rather do little and often.”
Seeing his previous performance in the app also gave him a simple target every session: beat what he did last week.
But training was only one part of it.
Regular check-ins and direct access to his coach, Darrell, gave Ben accountability throughout the process.
“Whenever I had a question, a comment or something I wasn't sure about, he would respond within hours.”
That accountability became hugely valuable.
10kg Down While Building Muscle
Over the course of his transformation, Ben lost around 10kg of body weight while simultaneously developing a significantly more muscular and aesthetic physique.
The transformation wasn't achieved through a crash diet or an unsustainable approach.
It came from consistently executing the fundamentals:
Structured resistance training
Progressive overload
Appropriate calorie control
Sufficient protein
Recovery
Accountability
Consistency over time
Ben's biggest lesson?
Consistency beats intensity.
“There's no one heroic workout or one perfect month that suddenly gives you the physique you want. It's the accumulation of a lot of fairly ordinary, consistent decisions.”
The Moment He Knew It Was Working
Around six months into the programme, Ben experienced the moment that made everything click.
After six to eight weeks of being particularly consistent with his training and nutrition, he started fitting into clothes he hadn't been able to wear for years.
“I could buy clothing in sizes smaller than I was used to, and things that had been sitting unworn in my wardrobe suddenly fitted again.”
For Ben, clothing became a more meaningful measurement than any individual number on a scale.
“I use one of the gym machines that scans weight, body fat and other measures, but those numbers can fluctuate. You have to trust the trend over time.” “Clothes don't really lie in the same way. That was my real ‘holy shit, this is working’ moment.”
Training Hard Isn't Enough
Perhaps the biggest misconception Ben had was that training hard was enough.
He was strong, experienced, and knew how to push himself physically.
But he hadn't appreciated how important calorie intake, portion control, recovery and consistency were.
“Because I was strong and trained regularly, it was quite easy to convince myself that I was doing everything right.”
Now, after more than a year of coaching, Ben can look at a meal and instinctively understand whether the portions make sense.
“Pasta is a perfect example. Who knew that an enormous bowl of pasta was enormously calorific? I used to pile it onto a plate. Now I can look at the same meal completely differently.”
That understanding is something Ben believes he'll carry with him long after the programme.
When Life Gets In The Way
Perhaps the most impressive part of Ben's transformation is that it didn't happen while everything was going perfectly.
During his time on the programme, he went through a divorce, lost his job, started his own business, attempted to sell his house, had the sale fall through and eventually moved back.
He also had periods of significant work travel.
There were plenty of reasons to stop.
But he didn't.
“The programme didn't become another burden during that period. It became an anchor.”
“The routine, the training, the connection with Darrell, and having something consistent to work towards gave me a constant while everything else was in flux.”
And that's an important lesson.
You don't need life to be perfect before you start.
There will always be work, travel, holidays, family commitments and unexpected problems.
The goal isn't to eliminate those things.
It's to build a system that can survive them.
“There may never be a perfect time. Real life is always going to happen. The point is to build something that can survive real life.”
What Would Ben Tell Someone Considering Coaching?
His advice is simple:
“I'd say sign up when you're genuinely prepared to commit to doing the programme, not just to the act of joining one.”
You don't need perfect circumstances.
You don't need to train for hours every day.
And you don't need to wait until life becomes less stressful.
You need a plan, accountability and the willingness to consistently execute that plan.
Ben started as someone who was already strong, already active and already training regularly.
But he wasn't getting the physique he wanted.
By learning how to structure his training, control his nutrition and stay consistent, he lost around 10kg while building a significantly leaner, more muscular physique at 47.
More importantly, he learned how to make those behaviours part of his lifestyle.
